Leopard Gorge Hiking Trail

Start: Kogelberg Nature Reserve Finish: Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens Duration: 6km, roughly 4 hours Fitness: moderate, this is a good one for families with children Our tip: if you can, stay in the new Oudebosch eco cabins the night before your hike Also known as the Oudebosch – Leopard\'s Gorge trail, this beautiful hike starts in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. The Kogelberg is a lost valley in the middle of the Cape mountains, one of Cape Nature\'s most beautiful protected area. There are a series of plants that occur only here in this nature reserve; no where else in the world. The trail, which begins at the reserve office, heads up from the Palmiet River valley via an indigenous forest to above Leopard\'s Gorge, before ending in Betty\'s Bay. But not before some incredible views from above Harold Porter. While still within the Kogelberg the trail follows the Oudebos River, heading up to Oude Bosch – what is left of an indigenous forest right at the top of the kloof. This is the only slightly taxing part of the hike. But it is worth it if you take the left fork at the end of the forest to see Betty\'s Bay and Stony Point come into view. The scenery here is mesmerising. A walk across the top of the waterfall brings you to the cliffs above Leopard\'s Gorge, and you descend in a series of zig-zag before finishing in the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. The only effort is to manage two vehicles – one on either end of the hike. And make sure that you have enough time to reach Harold Porter before their gates close at 18h00.

Overberg Charters

The South African coastline is one of beauty and variety; home to an extraordinary array of marine fauna and flora. Beyond this it is aesthetically exquisite. Its expanses guarantee stunning photographs and lifelong memories. Kleinmond is a small coastal town that is just 90 kilometres east of Cape Town. And it is from here and the nearby Gordon\'s Bay that Overberg Charters operate. Overberg Charters\' aim is to celebrate the beauty of the ocean and the things to which it is home. So, the 22-foot catamaran can be used for fishing expeditions, site seeing, research trips, testing your skiing skills, or simply sipping on cocktails while enjoying a sunset cruise. This is fabulous for the family, as a corporate outing, or for couples wanting to indulge in a romantic glass of champagne on the water. All of the experiences can be tailored to suit each client\'s needs so that your Overberg Charter is special and unique. The catamaran is best enjoyed by up to six people. Kleinmond, Gordon\'s Bay and the stretch of coast in-between are popular fishing spots. Keen fishermen can try their hand at catching steenbras, kabeljou, elf, galjoen and snoek. In addition, rock lobster, mussels, oysters, and octopuses are readily available to those who go looking for them. Between November and January, the crayfish are at their peak, but there are strict regulations regarding the size and number of these delicious shellfish. Going fishing with the pros at Overberg Charters gives you the best opportunity to find and catch some real beauties. The catamaran used for these excursions is quiet and environmentally friendly, not impacting negatively on the surrounding ocean or the life it supports. The charters run every day from 07h00.

Rent-A-Bike and cycle the Kogelberg

Rent-a-bike; own-the-experience. Two legs can get you so far breathing in the fresh air but two wheels can get you so much further with the wind blowing through your hair. Start your pedal an hour out of Cape Town on the southern tip of the African coast. Here, 7.5 Km from the Atlantic Ocean, begins a journey serenaded by the harmony of nature with a guest appearance by the Cape Mongoose and cheeky baboons. Exchange your i-pod for the sound of songbirds and your cares for the caress of countryside. Stay alert for a whale tail salute as the Southern Right Whales surface in your line of sight between August and November. The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve outside of Kleinmond is a 100 000 hectare haven to indigenous landscaping and natural landmarkings of rock, coast, ocean, animal life and vegetation. Second only to the South American rainforest in plant diversity this South African reserve flaunts 1880 different plant species, 77 of which appear nowhere else of earth. Born some 300 million years ago, time suspended cycling between these folded sandstone mountain ridges will put your youth in perspective and rejuvenate your soul while toning your legs. Recognised as a biodiversity hot-spot this new-concept reserve is unfenced by man with vistas uncontained by boundaries. Highlands trim the horizon with rose-edged orchards and fertile vineyards. Pockets of stained bush creep across a mountained canvas leaving a Fynbos heritage under glistening cobweb guardians. The African sun whitens the sandy coast lines on the tempestuous beaches below before plumping the skyline with scarlet colours setting on a False Bay dusk
