Disa River Waterfall

Within the surrounds of the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens is the Disa River trail. This visually appealing trail leads you to the Disa River Waterfall, a magnificent and quite special feature. The popular attraction sits below the waterfall in a 16 metre deep pool. The crystal clear waters transform from clear to a fully black mass of water. The waters turn dark from only 2 metres below its surface and result in zero visibility, giving this pool of water its eerie and bizarre feel. The trail, situated along the western part of the garden, runs along the Disa River (named after the flowering Disa Orchids), and is easy to walk, allowing for wheel chairs and prams. A short 30minutes (950m) brings you to the waterfall which can be accessed via a z shaped bridge, originally built in the 1950\'s -the bridge was built to better access material being used to build the dam above the waterfall. Apart from the waterfall the trail takes you over the Olive May Porter Bridge, where you can enter a wooded area best fit to spot a variety of bird species.

Go Sandboarding

Africa\'s version of snowboarding, sand boarding is an exhilarating sport taking advantage of South Africa\'s gradients and global gravity. An all over body workout this hobby also known as sand surfing is set in the rolling Cape dunes with white sand and golden sunshine. The favourite playgrounds for this sport is a spot called Lost City in a Nature Reserve at Atlantis (40 minutes outside Cape Town) with breathtaking views of Table Mountain and the city; or the Silver Sands of Betty\'s Bay (an hours drive up the East Coast). Nothing beats the feeling of standing strapped to a sand board on top of a wind crafted sand dune with wide open spaces surrounding you ... okay well one thing beats the feeling, coming down the sand dune yeeeeeehhhhhaaaaaaa! The textures of the sand create a different experience from snowboarding requiring an adjusted technique and modified equipment. Expert guides will have you flying down the dunes in no time, the soft sand will cushion a variety of wipeouts and after a good days sandoarding you may feel like a professional stunt master. Downhill Adventures are title holders at the Sand boarding World Championships and pro instructors using and providing only the best and safest sand-boarding equipment. Only fully imported, specially modified snowboards, boots and bindings are used, the boards are specially treated for optimum sand glide. Beginners to experienced boarders are catered for with no experience in any kind of board activity required. There are no \'ski-lifts\' so once you have walked up a dune in sand boarding boots carrying a sand board take a few minutes to take in the natural surroundings before swooshing your trail down the dune bank. Transfers to and from the meeting point in Cape Town centre (Downhill Adventures Office) is included in the cost as well as lessons, permits, equipment, refreshments and lunch. Departure time is 10h00 returning at 13h30 (half day) or 17h30 (full day), alternatively departure at 12h00 returning 17h30 (half day). Dress comfortably for exercise and hot weather, bring sunscreen, a cap, warm clothing for the trip home, thick socks, an even thicker sense of humour and camera equipment to take snaps of your moves for possible sponsorship.

Harold Porter Botanicle Gardens

Frolic in fynbos (native \'fine leafed\' bush); 190.5 ha of natural fynbos and 10 ha of cultivated fynbos flower from Cape coastline to mountain hump at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden. Beach dunes replace shells and driftwood with salt-adapting plants. Slopes slip into green gradients gardened with waterfalls and amber pools. Indigenous plant life morphs from flatland to forest, moving marsh to mountain, grading grass to gorge, handing heathland to heavens. Famed flora flaunts its beauty unfolding ecosystems of elements and animals. Blush like the pink Protea\'s petals as 88 bird species whistle you a song. Bring a picnic basket and a sketchpad and savour the bliss. Bring the dog and take to the trails. Bring the kids and roll on the lawn. Bring Granny for scones and memories at the coffee shop. Bring green fingers and purchase nursery bulbs. This Westcoast landscape showcases all Cape seasons flourishing with life from sand to soil. Enjoy the sunshine, shrubs and sometimes Summer concerts. The peaceful garden includes sweeping mountain slopes, deep gorges, and four vegetation types that occur naturally in the Overberg - afro montane forests, wetlands, coastal dunes and fynbos. For additional info see Harold Porter National Botanical Garden - it is a magical display of proteas, ericas, leucadendrons and restios set amidst meandering nature trails.

Leopard Gorge Hiking Trail

Start: Kogelberg Nature Reserve Finish: Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens Duration: 6km, roughly 4 hours Fitness: moderate, this is a good one for families with children Our tip: if you can, stay in the new Oudebosch eco cabins the night before your hike Also known as the Oudebosch – Leopard\'s Gorge trail, this beautiful hike starts in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. The Kogelberg is a lost valley in the middle of the Cape mountains, one of Cape Nature\'s most beautiful protected area. There are a series of plants that occur only here in this nature reserve; no where else in the world. The trail, which begins at the reserve office, heads up from the Palmiet River valley via an indigenous forest to above Leopard\'s Gorge, before ending in Betty\'s Bay. But not before some incredible views from above Harold Porter. While still within the Kogelberg the trail follows the Oudebos River, heading up to Oude Bosch – what is left of an indigenous forest right at the top of the kloof. This is the only slightly taxing part of the hike. But it is worth it if you take the left fork at the end of the forest to see Betty\'s Bay and Stony Point come into view. The scenery here is mesmerising. A walk across the top of the waterfall brings you to the cliffs above Leopard\'s Gorge, and you descend in a series of zig-zag before finishing in the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. The only effort is to manage two vehicles – one on either end of the hike. And make sure that you have enough time to reach Harold Porter before their gates close at 18h00.

Overberg Charters

The South African coastline is one of beauty and variety; home to an extraordinary array of marine fauna and flora. Beyond this it is aesthetically exquisite. Its expanses guarantee stunning photographs and lifelong memories. Kleinmond is a small coastal town that is just 90 kilometres east of Cape Town. And it is from here and the nearby Gordon\'s Bay that Overberg Charters operate. Overberg Charters\' aim is to celebrate the beauty of the ocean and the things to which it is home. So, the 22-foot catamaran can be used for fishing expeditions, site seeing, research trips, testing your skiing skills, or simply sipping on cocktails while enjoying a sunset cruise. This is fabulous for the family, as a corporate outing, or for couples wanting to indulge in a romantic glass of champagne on the water. All of the experiences can be tailored to suit each client\'s needs so that your Overberg Charter is special and unique. The catamaran is best enjoyed by up to six people. Kleinmond, Gordon\'s Bay and the stretch of coast in-between are popular fishing spots. Keen fishermen can try their hand at catching steenbras, kabeljou, elf, galjoen and snoek. In addition, rock lobster, mussels, oysters, and octopuses are readily available to those who go looking for them. Between November and January, the crayfish are at their peak, but there are strict regulations regarding the size and number of these delicious shellfish. Going fishing with the pros at Overberg Charters gives you the best opportunity to find and catch some real beauties. The catamaran used for these excursions is quiet and environmentally friendly, not impacting negatively on the surrounding ocean or the life it supports. The charters run every day from 07h00.

Rent-A-Bike and cycle the Kogelberg

Rent-a-bike; own-the-experience. Two legs can get you so far breathing in the fresh air but two wheels can get you so much further with the wind blowing through your hair. Start your pedal an hour out of Cape Town on the southern tip of the African coast. Here, 7.5 Km from the Atlantic Ocean, begins a journey serenaded by the harmony of nature with a guest appearance by the Cape Mongoose and cheeky baboons. Exchange your i-pod for the sound of songbirds and your cares for the caress of countryside. Stay alert for a whale tail salute as the Southern Right Whales surface in your line of sight between August and November. The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve outside of Kleinmond is a 100 000 hectare haven to indigenous landscaping and natural landmarkings of rock, coast, ocean, animal life and vegetation. Second only to the South American rainforest in plant diversity this South African reserve flaunts 1880 different plant species, 77 of which appear nowhere else of earth. Born some 300 million years ago, time suspended cycling between these folded sandstone mountain ridges will put your youth in perspective and rejuvenate your soul while toning your legs. Recognised as a biodiversity hot-spot this new-concept reserve is unfenced by man with vistas uncontained by boundaries. Highlands trim the horizon with rose-edged orchards and fertile vineyards. Pockets of stained bush creep across a mountained canvas leaving a Fynbos heritage under glistening cobweb guardians. The African sun whitens the sandy coast lines on the tempestuous beaches below before plumping the skyline with scarlet colours setting on a False Bay dusk

Three Sisters Hike

A moderate walk of 16 km, the Three Sisters Walk is a there-and-back hike that will take you roughly 5 to 6 hours to complete. Three Sister is a favourite amongst locals hikers and tourists, because of the breathtaking views of the ocean, the indigenous plants and scenery, and the exquisitely beautiful flowers that have attracted a following around the world. To appreciate this walk to its fullest, we recommend doing it during the months of August to October as this is peak flowering season in the area. Remember to bring everything you will need to a day-long hike, as there is no drinking water along the way.
